BAWDEN Edward

Edward Bawden was born in Braintree, Essex in 1903 and died in Saffron Walden in 1989. He studied at Cambridge School of Art and the Royal College of Art. Bawden was an Essex painter and graphic designer who spent most of his working life in Great Bardfield. Generally, he painted in watercolours, never oil, and his subject material was mostly landscape and buildings. His style varied from coloured line drawings to much freer expressionistic paintings (i.e. Craigievar Castle 3) but all his work was unmistakably in his 'handwriting'.

Edward Bawden was a prodigious worker in a variety of media; large decorative murals, book and advertising illustrations, and different types of printing - all executed with a fine sense of design and often with a quiet sense of humour. His work has been purchased by London, Dominion and provincial galleries.
