ROSOMAN OBE Leonard

Leonard Rosoman was born in London in 1913. He studied at the University of Durham, the Royal Academy Schools and the Central School of Arts and Crafts, London

He was Official War Artist in 1943, and then taught at Camberwell School of Art, Edinburgh College of Art, the Royal College of Art and Chelsea School of Art. He paints in oils and watercolour and is well known for his mural decorations. He has painted murals for the Festival of Britain, the British Pavilion – Brussels World Fair, the Shakespeare Exhibition, the Ministry of Education, and elsewhere. A very imaginative painter, his watercolours have an almost fragile and insubstantial quality and although of naturalistic subjects they often exhibit elements of fantasy – one is never quite sure what is going on! His work is in many collections including the National Portrait Gallery, the British Museum and the Imperial War Museum.
