Gertrude Hermes was born in Bickley, Kent in 1901 and died in 1983. She studied at Beckenham School of Art and the Leon Underwood School of Painting and Sculpture. Hermes was a Sculptor, Wood Engraver, Book Illustrator, Painter and Printmaker. She taught at the Royal Academy Schools, St. Martin’s School of Art and Chelsea School of Art.
She received many commissions for wood engravings including work for Penguins Illustrated Classics. After a period of working in Canada she returned to London and exhibited regularly at the RA. In 1939 she represented Britain at the Venice International Exhibition.
Her work is in the tradition of British representative sculpture and is mostly of portrait subjects. Her work can be found in many public collections including the Tate Gallery.
