GROSS Anthony

Anthony Gross was born in London in 1905 and died in France in 1984. He studied at Slade School and Ecole des Beaux Arts, Paris. Gross lived in Greenwich and France.

Gross was a member of the London Group. He painted landscapes and rural scenes of England and France in oil and watercolour. He had an international reputation as an etcher and engraver and wrote a book on the subject. His pictures demonstrate his individual technique of intricate drawing (the influence of etching) overlaid by patches of clear colour. He had a considerable reputation as a printmaker and few artists possessed such technical skill in that medium. He made cartoons and films and also worked as an illustrator – he illustrated the Forsyth Saga. He was an Official War Artist 1944-45. His works can be found in the Tate Gallery, British Museum, Metropolitan Museum of New York, and other public collections.
