Harlow is now officially a “Fairtrade” town. The status recognises towns which help developing countries in the world by promoting Fairtrade products.
Harlow Council and Harlow Fairtrade Town Group applied for the status in September and have just received confirmation that it now holds the status.
The Fairtrade Town status highlights Harlow as a town dedicated to promoting Fairtrade. The FAIRTRADE Mark is an independent consumer label which appears on products as an independent guarantee that disadvantaged producers in the developing world are getting a better deal.
For a product to display the FAIRTRADE Mark it must meet international Fairtrade standards. These standards are set by the international certification body Fairtrade Labelling Organisations International (FLO).
Today there over 2000 Fairtrade marked products in the UK. Fresh fruit, coffee, cotton t-shirts, tea, sugar, fruit juice, honey, chocolate, flowers, sports balls, wines and beers are just some of the products available which carry the mark. The official launch of Harlow's Fairtrade Town Status will take place in February 2008 and will be marked by a photographic exhibition that co-incides with Fairtrade forthnight, held in the Civic Centre Gallery.
