Harlow Market
Harlow Development Corporation first discussed setting up an agricultural market, a market Hall or an open market for the town in 1948 and Sir Frederick Gibberd and others decided on an open market with stalls.
Located at East Gate it was planned as one of four civic squares in the town centre.
The first market in Market Square took place on 16 May 1956.There were 46 stalls and market days were on Tuesday and Saturday.
In July 1957 Harlow Urban District Council, a forerunner to the current Council, became the market authority. Additional market days were added - Fridays (1964) and Thursdays (1976).
Harlow Market is now held five days a week excluding Wednesday and Sunday in the covered market square featuring stall selling fruit and vegetables, clothing, household items and much more. The Monday Market, which focuses on bric-a-brac, is particularly popular.
