Ekkenhard Altenburger was commissioned to commemorate Patricia, Lady Gibberd, a founder member and longest serving member of Harlow Arts Trust.

The title given to the work refers to an ancient Greek philosophical concept of balance between the rational mind and the passions. It is one of a pair of Sculptures on the same theme, the second of which is in Guatemala City, Central America.
