Gibberd Gallery, Civic Centre, Owned by Harlow Art Trust
Physical Energy was bought by the Trust in 1960 and
sited in the Town Hall. It is one of a number of casts made by the
Fine Arts Society and is a small version of the monumental work
sited in Kensington Gardens, London on which Watts worked for 25
years. Another two large-scale casts of this work were made. One
forms the Rhodes Memorial in Cape Town, South Africa and the other
is in the gardens of the National Archive in Harare, Zimbabwe.
Physical Energy was inspired by a commission from Hugh
Lupus Grosvenor for a portrayal of one of his ancestors as a
horse-riding hunter.
