Sir Frederick Gibberd began a private collection of artwork in 1935 formed around three characteristic features: each picture had to be by a British artist; the artist had to be living; and each picture had to be a watercolour, a drawing or a print.

In 1977, he presented Harlow Council with 10 of the artworks and these formed the basis of the 'Frederick Gibberd Collection of 20th Century British Watercolours and Drawings'. Before his death in 1984 he donated a further 33 works resulting in a collection that contained pieces by many of Britain's most influential artists of the period.

This charming collection is a permanent feature at the Gibberd Gallery, a purpose built space with two exhibition areas.

Temporary exhibitions are displayed on the central walls of the Gallery and the changing exhibition programme is an eclectic mix of work from both local artists and artists of World-renown.

Every Saturday during term time the Gallery runns a Saturday Art Club for children to come along with a helper to make anything from puppets and paintings to models and masks. The Gallery supplies all the materials and other messy stuff and the finished masterpieces can be taken away at the end of the session.
