The Font - Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral by Sir Frederick Gibberd
The Font - Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral
Artist: Sir Frederick Gibberd
Rubbed Indian Ink
696 x 527mm
27.5 x 30.75ins
The geometric scale drawing for the font is rendered in rubbed
Indian ink. The font was made from a solid block of white marble in
the form of a drum. Two bowls were required. One, the smaller, for
baptismal water, the other to receive the water spilled on the
infant. As two unequal bowls would have left large areas of marble
top and also dictated the position of the child, this solution of
placing one bowl within another was devised. As the drawing shows,
a shallow trough surrounds a central, deep bowl for the holy water.
The font cover is a dished lid made of silver plated brass. The
photograph gives a view of the font set within the circular
baptistry as seen from the nave - the sliding gates to the
baptistry partially closed.
