Two pages from a sketch book in which ideas were explored for the
doors of the tabernacle of the Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral.
The tabernacle is a long cupboard let into the wall. It has three
sliding bronze doors embellished with silver plate, coloured
enamel, ivory and coloured glass. The design of the centre door
symbolises the glory of God by representing the heavens and
constellations and those on either side the Passion - symbolised by
the chalice and cross. Ceri Richards was also responsible for the
reredos and stained glass windows and describing his work said:
"Temperamentally I feel attuned to the movement and dynamism that
lie in nature and events". Entering the chapel is rather like
stepping into a picture.
