General Introduction
Harlow, the town which saw the
birth of fibre-optic cable, the development of cutting edge radar
equipment and significant research and development activity, has
the potential to enjoy a vibrant future.
A regeneration process is underway, transforming the town and
re-creating the bold, aspirational and innovative place that was
Harlow in its heyday.
A partnership between Harlow Council, Harlow Renaissance and a
developer will see the northern quarter of the town centre,
incorporating the market square and bus station,
transformed.
Following consultation with the Harlow community a planning
application will be submitted.
The development proposals signify a major step-change for the town,
aimed at transforming Harlow into a sub-regional shopping centre.
The regeneration of Town Centre North will re-integrate the area
into the Harvey Centre and the Water Gardens development to the
south.
The scheme features a retail-led, mixed-use development with
leisure opportunities, to extend the day and increase the evening
economy. It will also re-create a sense of place and identity for
the Market Square.
Four of the town's neighbourhoods are also being regenerated after
successful applications were made for GAF 2 funding. Staple Tye,
Clifton Hatch, Old Harlow and Prentice Place are all being
transformed to provide additional housing and improved services for
each community.
